After graduation, she studied at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English and African American study. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism as a student. DuVernay began her career working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to sit at the house of one member of the jury as well as look through their trash. She was disappointed by her journalism tasks and decided to switch over to the field of public relations. DuVernay found a job immediately out college, as a young publicist for a studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency. In addition to PR, the company has also launched lifestyle networks as well as advertising campaigns such as The Urban Beauty Collective.
